A hoophouse, or high tunnel, is a series of arches that are covered with polyvinyl plastic.  A hoophouse is heated by the sun and protected from wind, and therefore can extend the growing season by as much as 6 weeks in the fall and spring.  DSC01685This is especially important in Wisconsin where the growing season typically doesn’t start until the second week of May and ends the first week of October.  Crops that can be planted in a hoophouse for fall and winter consumption include arugula, spinach, carrot, and swiss chard.
